By mid-2004, MySpace had arrived at the point where it had to make what Web developers call the “scale up” versus “scale out” decisionwhether to scale up to bigger, more powerful and more expensive servers, or spread out the database workload across lots of relatively cheap servers. In general, large Web sites tend to adopt a scale-out approach that allows them to keep adding capacity by adding more servers.

People all over the world are constantly building web applications using .NET, using Java, and using PHP all the time. None of them are failing because of the choice of technology.

These debates are enormously fun and a total and utter waste of time, because the bottom line is that there are three and a half platforms (C#, Java, PHP, and a half Python) that are all equally likely to make you successful, an infinity of platforms where you’re pretty much guaranteed to fail spectacularly when it’s too late to change anything (Lisp, ISAPI DLLs written in C, Perl), and a handful of platforms where The Jury Is Not In, So Why Take The Risk When Your Job Is On The Line? (Ruby on Rails).

How do you decide between C#, Java, PHP, and Python? The only real difference is which one you know better.

PHP Framework

OK I am known to be a Microsoft fan, but for web development I sometimes need to do some infidelities to Billy. Especially this time because I must take hosting costs into account.

Since I am used to ASP.NET development tools and framework, I really do not want to do “jungle” PHP development anymore. That is why I am looking for a good PHP framework for this new project. The question now is which one is the best one for me, or at least which one fits all of my needs. Just try to type “PHP framework” in your favorite search engine and you will see that is a very tough question!

MySpace IT

MySpace’s extensive IT architecture currently features 2,682 Web servers, 90 Cache servers with 16GB RAM, 450 Dart Servers, 60 database servers, 150 media processing servers, 1,000 disks in a SAN (storage area network) deployment, three data centers and 17,000MB per second of bandwidth throughput.

New IE7 download

The IE team released a new IE7 download. You can download it here. You have to uninstall your previous version :

>Click “Start,” and then click “Control Panel.” Click “Add or Remove Programs.”
>Check “Show Updates” at the top of the dialog box.
>Scroll down the list to “Windows XP - Software Updates,” select “Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview,” and then click “Change/Remove.”

More details on the IE team’s post. I installed it, my first impression is that it looks quicker. Maybe just an impression.

How Click Fraud Could Swallow the Internet

Interesting article in Wired mag about click fraud on online advertising systems. According to them:

The amount of click fraud is difficult to quantify; estimates of the
proportion of fake clicks run from as low as 1 in 10 to as high as 1 in
2. In a widely cited recent study, MarketingExperiments.com, an online
marketing research outfit, reported that “as much as 29.5 percent” of
the clicks in three experimental PPC campaigns on Google were
fraudulent.

People are using different techniques to fraud Google AdWords for example: click farms in India, fraud softwares that disguise clicks’ origins, network of zombie computers. Or this:

Companies also have begun attacking rivals with “impression fraud” -
repeatedly reloading a search engine page where the rival’s ad appears,
without clicking on it, in order to eliminate it. (Google and Yahoo!
routinely take steps to drop nonperforming ads.)

This is dangerous for Google because their main revenue source is online ads. One solution would be to change the model from cost-per-clik (CPC) to cost-per-action.

Google and BMW

Google has given bmw.de a page rank of zero (meaning it is not going to appear on the first pages of a search) because bmw.de has used a trick called doorway pages. What BMW did was to use text based pages that redirect to the normal bmw.de web site, which site relies on javascript code that is not searchable by Google. The content was basically the same, so I don’t think it is really cheating.
Google is taking a dangerous way these last times, accepting censorship for Google China, and acquiring 5% stake in AOL “fuelling fears of preferential treatment for AOL within Google searches” as BBC said.
Also Google said that it will help AOL to get better search ranks for their contents in Google. Are they going to tell AOL to use doorway pages???

Just after my previous post on Memeorandum, I found this article in techcrunch about the “Memeorandum hunters”. There is a list of many of these services. Looks like there is going to be a battle in this space of “real-time news aggregators”, and I’m sure that some of them will get acquired by Yahoo, MSN or Google.
